Artist Statement
An essential aspect of my artistic practice is to reflect on the interdependence of visual and textual content as well as to fathom the manifold potential of narration. I create drawings and analog drawn, experimental animations, that evoke meaning rather associatively and resonate on an emotional level, quite like lyrical language does. I am interested in developing narration and sequences which contain something enigmatic and don’t reveal the motives of the „story“ right away.

Bio
Moana Vonstadl lives and works in Berlin and occasionally in rural Austria. Since graduating from the UdK Berlin in 2009, she has been working on free projects in the field of drawing and experimental animation. Mostly they are charcoal and ink drawings in combination with short texts, which are reassembled in different combinations. She experiments with motifs and narratives that reincorporate the wild and supposedly demonic as aspects of femininity* in a positive or at least value-free way. Thus, works emerge from personal aphorisms and quotations, mythological symbolism, and intuitive imagery. With her animations she has been represented at national and international film festivals (such as: Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, DOK Leipzig, Tricky Women Vienna, Annecy Animation Film Festival, MIAF Melbourne). In 2018 she received the Research Grant for Film and Video from the Berlin Senate and in 2019 the Project Grant for Art Film from the State of Lower Austria.
